As we welcome the new year, many of us reflect on ways to support our health and well-being. At Alameda Health System (AHS) we are committed to caring for the whole person by fostering health, connection and community for our patients, families and individuals.

Through our Parks Prescription (Parks Rx) initiative, a collaboration between Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH), Pediatrics, and East Bay Regional Parks (EBRP), we offer welcoming opportunities for families and individuals to spend time outdoors. Events such as Walk with Your Doc, Cafecito in Nature, and Family Fun Days create safe, inclusive spaces to connect with nature, strengthen relationships and support overall wellness.

“Time in nature and outdoor activities allows families and individuals to unplug from screens and the stress of daily life, step outside the confines of classrooms, exam rooms, and office spaces, and simply be in nature,” said Tashi Colston, clinical social worker with IBH Pediatrics. “Research shows that time spent outdoors can reduce depression, anxiety, attention deficits and sugar levels, while improving cognition, motor skills and vitamin D levels. When you experience nature for yourself and see those who have participated in Parks Rx events, you see people who are more peaceful, present and grateful for time that allows them to breathe, slow down and just be.”

Parks Rx invites families and individuals to experience nature as a source of healing and connection. By normalizing time outdoors as a supportive practice, the program helps reduce mental health stigma while strengthening community ties.

In partnership with EBRP, Parks Rx hosts inclusive, accessible events for people of all ages and abilities. Participants enjoy shared activities, help care for park spaces, and receive meals, coffee, conchas and healthy snacks provided by our generous EBRP partners.

Parks Rx offers a simple, meaningful way for families and individuals to spend time outdoors while supporting health, connection and community. We look forward to continuing this work and welcoming participants to upcoming Parks Rx events in the year ahead.
