Alameda Health System (AHS) has earned national recognition as one of just 26 organizations selected to join the Change Maker Accelerators Program led by the National Academy of Medicine’s (NAM) Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience. The highly competitive, yearlong initiative brings together hospitals, health systems, academic institutions and care delivery sites committed to reducing burnout and supporting clinician well-being.

“What excites us most about being selected for the Change Maker Accelerators Program at Alameda Health System is the opportunity to bring the lived experiences of a diverse, mission-driven workforce into a national forum,” said Ken Coelho, associate designated institutional official (A-DIO) and director of graduate and continuing medical education (GME/CME). “Through this effort, we can help shape and validate equity-centered interventions and showcase AHS’ systemwide programs nationally.”

The application was led by Coelho. He and Sofia Newton, program manager for the Healthy-Me Wellness Program, will represent AHS throughout the yearlong initiative.

This builds on AHS’ long-standing commitment to workforce well-being, with programs such as Schwartz Rounds, which help staff process challenges and address burnout, along with peer support, mindfulness offerings and the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) helping staff stay resilient while caring for patients.

“Our wellness offerings are designed to support staff in practical, meaningful ways, strengthening community and recognizing the shared challenges health care workers face,” shared Newton. “This national initiative elevates that work and helps turn our commitment to workforce well-being into measurable progress.”

The Accelerator Program builds on NAM’s landmark 2022 report, National Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being, which calls for collective action to address systemic factors contributing to workforce burnout.

Aligned with these goals, Coelho and Newton will engage in personalized coaching, peer learning and collaborative problem-solving with organizations across the country.

This recognition highlights AHS’ employee health and wellness efforts and gives momentum to strengthen those programs while helping shape the future of workforce well-being.

“We’re honored to be selected, as it recognizes our commitment to supporting staff well-being during a challenging time in health care,” said Terrie Dixon, RN, director of employee health services, disability management and wellness. “It also gives us the opportunity to learn from experts and continue strengthening our programs.”
