E-Prescribing
Outlined Process for Resident/Trainee E-Prescribing access:
- Resident requesting e-prescribing privileges will email their Program Director/Site Coordinator for approval with attached copy of DEA license certificate.
- Program Director/Site Coordinator will send approval to the Program Coordinator with attached copy of DEA license certificate.
- Program Coordinator will submit a revised ISLR request to add Pyxis access to Nathan Calloway.
- Once the ISLR has been approved/processed, the resident can call the IS Service Desk (510 437-4503) to open a ticket for scheduling enrollment of their DEA/EPCS Privileges.
- Service Desk will open a ticket with the desktop team
- Desktop team will reach out to the Resident for scheduling the enrollment
Highland Orthopedic Service- Resident Team
- The residents will have individual duty assignments but will work as a team led by the Ortho Chief Resident.
- Attending physicians are available 24/7 to supervise the residents and participate in care delivery

Attending Supervision
- An attending physician will staff all new consultations
- The attending physician on call should be contacted to discuss:
- All new consultations
- Questions or concerns regarding existing patients:
- Vital sign changes or change in mental status
- Changes in neurovascular status or compartment compressibility
- Pain not controlled by standard pain regiment
- Interval change on imaging or laboratory studies
- Any question or concern
Daily Work

- Operative site marking (“OK” and/or “Provider Initials”) must be performed with OR marking pen prior to patient going into the OR
- 24-hour update or daily rounding note must be present in Epic

“STOP the line”

If there is a quality/safety concern at any time in the OR, any member of the team can verbalize “STOP THE LINE” and all members must stop their activity to discuss the concern.

Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program
The San Francisco Orthopedic Residency Program with home institution at St. Mary’s Hospital offers three categorical orthopedic surgery residency positions each year with a total of 15 residents participating in our program annually (three residents per PGY-1 through PGY-5). Participating institutions include Highland Hospital, Kaiser-Oakland and the Shrines Hospital in Sacramento, CA. Resident hands-on experience is intertwined with our core curriculum, which serves as the foundation for the academic side of the program.
SFORP emphasizes the exploration of didactic learning through academic preparation and research. This includes a series of lectures and conferences covering topics in:
- Anatomy and surgical cadaver dissection
- Fractures related to basic science, foot and ankle, adult arthroplasty, sports, bio-mechanical, pediatrics, oncology, hand, spine, trauma and rehab
- Casting and splinting
During the residency of five years, residents will learn all aspects of orthopedic surgery and musculoskeletal medicine, including:

Podiatry Medicine and Surgery Residency Program
St. Mary’s Medical Center offers a Podiatry Medicine and Surgery Residency Program, with added credentials (rear foot and ankle reconstructive surgery residency program, which takes three residents per year.) St. Mary’s Medical Center is proud to produce confident and well-trained podiatric physicians competent in performing forefoot, rear foot and ankle reconstructive surgery, trauma surgery and diabetic wound care.
The first year is primarily an internship with emphasis on internal medicine, emergency medicine, podiatric surgery, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery and trauma. This year is challenging, but integrates into multiple disciplines and makes a well-rounded physician.
The second year is more focused with an emphasis on wound care, plastic reconstruction, sports medicine, podiatric reconstructive surgery and trauma.
The third year is all podiatric surgical rotations with emphasis on elective foot and ankle surgery, rear foot and ankle reconstructive surgery and trauma. Throughout the second and third years the residents work in podiatric clinics and multidisciplinary clinics that provides training experience in trauma, elective surgery, biomechanics, wound care, limb salvage, and amputations.
Throughout the training, there are teaching responsibilities for medical students, podiatric medical students, and medical and surgical interns. There are also wide ranges of academic meetings to ensure knowledge is expanding with skills.

Emergency Department Resident: Orthopedic Rotation
ED Intern Rotation:
Goals:
- Be able to manage patients admitted to the Orthopedic Service
- Perform comprehensive Orthopedic Trauma Examination
- Be able to perform Orthopedic consultations for patient admitted to the hospital and present in the Emergency Department
- Be able to safely admit and discharge patients
Expectations:
- Carry ortho phone and pager at all times and respond in a timely fashion
- For consults, give formal presentation to an attending including any pictures/images and your treatment plan
- Complete consult note with an assessment and plan for each consult you see by the end of the day
- Before the note, contact the team directly with the plan, and make sure they ask questions to clarify. Speak with an attending if needed.
ED2 Rotation:
Goals:
- Be able to evaluate and treat patients in the ambulatory setting
- Refine comprehensive Orthopedic Trauma Examination
- Develop exposure to the Operative environment including: Scrubbing in, maintaining sterile technique, first assisting and developing technical skill at wound closure.
- Participate in taking Orthopedic Call under the supervision of an attending Orthopedic Surgeon.
- Provide secondary support to the interns in regards to Orthopedic consultations, admissions and discharges
Expectations:
- Carry ortho phone and pager at all times and respond in a timely fashion
- When seeing patients in clinic, give formal presentation to an attending including any pictures/images and your treatment plan.
- All notes should be completed the same day
- For pre-operative/post-operative patients, check with the attending physician and/or physicians assistants prior to seeing the patient.
