Radiology Team
- Dr. Louise Truong, Chief of. Breast Imaging
Alameda Health System is proud to offer compassionate and state-of-the art breast imaging services. These services are used in breast cancer detection. It has shown that early detection saves lives by diagnosing breast cancer in the early, more easily treatable stages.
You are most likely to be screened first with a digital mammogram.
Breast imaging services we offer:
Digital Mammography
- Mammograms are low-dose X-ray images of the breast. Mammograms are performed with a machine that uses 2 plates that compress or flatten the breast to spread the tissue apart. This compression gives a better quality picture and allows less radiation to be used. Images are then taken and interpreted by a radiologist.
3D mammography (Digital Breast Tomosynthesis)
- The latest in technology, 3D mammography is performed in a similar manner to conventional digital mammography. 3D mammography produces higher-quality images than conventional digital mammography, which allows radiologists to see your breast tissue details more clearly.
Diagnostic Breast Ultrasound
- Ultrasound (also called sonography) is an imaging study that uses a transducer with high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the breast. This examination does not use radiation.
Image-guided Biopsy (ultrasound and stereotactic)
- During a biopsy, a doctor removes small pieces of breast tissue from a suspicious area so they can be looked at in the lab to see if they contain cancer cells. Biopsies can be performed under ultrasound or mammographic (stereotactic) guidance.
Image-guided Preoperative Localization (ultrasound and mammographic)
- If a surgery is required for removal of breast tissue, the surgeon may request that a wire or other localizing device (such as a seed) be placed into the breast to help guide the surgeon to the correct spot.

Preparing for Your Exam
Digital Mammography and 3D Mammography
On the day of your mammogram, don’t use deodorant, perfume, lotion or powder on your breasts or under your arms. These products can interfere with the imaging process.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, make sure your doctor and mammogram technologist are aware of these things.
To identify changes over time, your radiologist may want to compare your latest mammogram images with your past images. Please bring any prior outside breast imaging CDs or reports with you, if available.
