Did you know that Alameda Health System (AHS) has affinity groups? Sometimes called employee resource groups (ERGs), affinity groups are voluntary, employee-led and open to new members. Active AHS affinity groups include:

  • Black Employees & Allies Network
  • LGBTQIA+ & Allies Group
  • Latinx & Allies Group

An Asian American and Pacific Islander affinity group is also being organized and will become active soon.

Affinity groups are a great way to make friends, nurture community and make a difference at AHS. Joining one can help employees find a greater sense of belonging. Many affinity groups also advocate for diversity and inclusion initiatives that can make AHS a more equitable place to work. By the way, you don’t have to identify as anything or anyone to join. Allies are welcome!

Most of our affinity groups meet regularly, organize events and champion issues that are important to their members. For example, the Black Employees & Allies Network (BEAN) recently hosted a Juneteenth celebration at the Wilma Chan Highland Hospital Campus Cafeteria featuring art and storytelling by AHS Chaplain Betty Clark.

To join an affinity group, contact Lorna Jones at LoJones@alamedahealthsystem.org.

Don’t see an affinity group that’s right for you? Create your own! You can find a toolkit explaining how to establish an AHS affinity group on the AHS intranet here.
