On Saturday, February 3, 2018, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf joined Alameda Health System executives, board members and staff as they extended their service and commitment to the community beyond the AHS Highland Hospital Campus in a neighborhood clean-up event.

“You all do healthcare well, but I am glad you are taking a holistic approach to wellness. Looking at all the social determinants of health that help contribute to community’s wellbeing is exactly what we need,” said Schaaf. “I am glad to be here with you today to help beautify this city we are so fortunate to live in.”

This activity was in conjunction with the City of Oakland’s “Adopt-a-Spot” program, as AHS has “adopted” the perimeter around Highland Hospital. The event was from 9-11a.m. and consisted of about 30 AHS volunteers. Oakland’s Adopt-a-Spot program supports individuals, neighborhood groups, civic organizations, and businesses in ongoing cleaning and greening of public spaces.

“I was honored to participate in this event today alongside my AHS colleagues and Mayor Schaaf. At AHS we are committed to making a positive contribution to Alameda County,” said Delvecchio Finley, Alameda Health System CEO. “We want the community to know that we are here to serve them. AHS is committed to caring, healing, teaching and serving all. We understand the impact we have on our neighborhoods and we want to do what we can to help our communities. Let’s help keep Oakland clean.”

This is just one of the community service activities AHS has lined up for 2018. AHS recently participated in a volunteer activity for the MLK Day of Service with one of their partners, the Alameda County Community Food Bank.

At the end of the cleanup activity, AHS volunteers and the Mayor filled nearly 40 bags of trash.
