A “specialist” is a doctor who treats only certain parts of the body (e.g. dermatologist), or a particular class of diseases (e.g. cardiologist) or have specialized techniques (e.g. surgery). These doctors have received advanced training and certification by a specialty examining board.
Alameda Health System offers specialist services in more than 25 areas. But in order to see a specialist, your primary physician and/or emergency room physician must make a recommendation, known as a “referral.”
If you have any questions regarding seeing a specialist, please contact your primary care physician. If you do not have a primary care physician and would like to make an appointment, please call 510-437-8500.
