This is our first bargaining update. It reflects our commitment to communicate in a timely manner and provide valuable information to you throughout the bargaining process. Our primary objective in this process is to work with the ILWU Local 6 to reach an agreement that leads to an enhanced patient care experience; supports our ability to provide a great working environment; and creates long-term sustainability that ensures our ability to contribute to the overall health and wellness of the people we serve.

Caring for All

Alameda Health System’s mission is caring, healing, teaching, serving all. It’s the foundation of everything we do as a provider of essential health care services to everyone, particularly vulnerable populations. It is our intent to keep those we serve in the center of all we do, including labor negotiations. This is critical for patients, because their care experience depends upon enabling our staff, especially those who work at the bedside, to provide the best care possible.

We recognize that our employees, as our most valuable resource, are integral to achieving many of our organizational goals, including transforming to a population health management system. During bargaining, we have been mindful of an uncertain future for key programs and sources of funding for essential public hospitals, recognizing that significant changes in the ACA, Medicare and Medi-Cal could drastically impact our ability to fulfill our mission.

Bargaining Progress

AHS has met with the ILWU Local 6 six times since December: December 21, 2018, January 8, 2019, January 15, 2019, January 24, 2019, February 7, 2019 and February 12, 2019.

AHS and the ILWU Local 6 have exchanged proposals on 38 articles.

The Parties have reached tentative agreements on 10 non-economic proposals. These tentative agreements are indicators of meaningful progress achieved by the willingness of all involved to find common ground.

We are committed to reaching a complete agreement in a timely manner. We are optimistic that the open dialog with the ILWU Local 6 continues, and that we will continue to make progress.
